When they arrived home, Marco told her he was taking Pickles out for his final walk. She waited until the door closed behind him, then she pulled out her phone and thumbed it on, looking at the message from Enigma again.

Could the man in the hallway be Enigma? If he was, he’d made physical contact with her, so why keep up with the riddles? And what the hell did this one mean? She didn’t think it really had anything to do with wizards or fantasy or RPGs. This message meant something else, but she just didn’t have enough information to figure it out.

She felt guilty for keeping this from Marco. She would hate it if he kept something like this from her, but the whole way home in the car, he’d been preoccupied, puzzling over the case at the homeless shelter, a murder where they didn’t have a single lead. With Tag leaving for her honeymoon, Marco worried the case would go cold. She also knew the thought of the baby arriving in four short months preyed on him. Their lives were about to change in so many ways, and now there would be a helpless little person they both had to protect from harm. It was too much right now, and she didn’t want to burden him further.

Besides, it was her case. She listened to his cases, even offered advice, but she was careful not to overstep her boundaries. Marco struggled keeping the same boundaries where she was concerned and it put pressure on their relationship. She didn’t want that. She hated it when things were tense between them.

She swiped the messages away and clicked the lock screen, then she set the phone on the counter and shucked out of her tuxedo jacket, unhooking the tight cummerbund. Walking into their room, she took a seat on the end of the bed and kicked off her shoes, sighing in relief.

By the time Marco returned, she’d pulled on her fluffy pajamas and put her hair up in a ponytail, wiping the makeup off her face with a makeup sponge. Pickles beat him to the room, leaping onto the bed. Marco appeared a moment later, kissing her temple.

“I’m gonna take a shower. Everything’s locked up.”

“Sounds good,” she said, watching him as he walked toward the bathroom. “Marco?”

He paused and looked over his shoulder at her. She was struck, as she was so many times before, by how handsome he was. And the way he looked at her sent her guilt soaring. There was only love and acceptance in his blue eyes. And trust. Implicit trust.

“What, sweetheart?”

She also saw the tense way he held his shoulders, the weariness in his features, and she knew she couldn’t add more to his plate. “I love you,” she said. “More than anything.”

He smiled, his eyes so tired. “I love you, sweetheart. More than anything,” he said.

She listened as the shower started running, reaching out to stroke Pickles’ fur. He pressed his little face into her hand and she curved her fingers under his chin.
